Matthew C. Hoppe Obituary

It is with deep sorrow that we share that Matthew C. Hoppe, 50, passed away on February 18, 2024, in Maryland.  He is survived by his loving wife of 23 years, Lisha Hoppe, whom he met in college; his beautiful daughter, Shila Hoppe; his mother, Lynn Hoppe, of Atlanta; and his sister, Emily Hoppe, of Las Vegas. Matt was preceded in death by his father, Martin C. Hoppe.  Matt is also survived by his father and mother-in law, Larry and Yvonne Mummert; brothers and sisters-in law, Lela Reichart, Lane Mummert (and Shanon), Ladd Mummert (and Tiana); many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Matt was born on December 7, 1973, in Connecticut.  A graduate of Wilton High School ‘92, it was there where he discovered his love for lacrosse, winning multiple state championships.  He continued to pursue his passion at Western Maryland College, now known as McDaniel College, becoming a USILA All-American (Attack, 1997). His accomplishments were later recognized with an induction into the McDaniel Green Terror Sports Hall of Fame in 2014, a testament to his dedication and talent in the sport.

After earning his bachelor’s degree in art, Matt began his career at IBM in Atlanta, and eventually worked for 13 years at Under Armour in 3D Motion Design/XR.  His work has been shown in Times Square, during Baltimore Ravens and Washington Capitals games and many other media outlets.  One of his proudest achievements was the 2013 Telly Award as 3D Director.  Matt most recently was Senior Manager of the 3D Design Team at Stanley Black & Decker, who shared that Matt was tremendously talented yet humble, a creative visionary with an aptitude to lead and inspire others. He was passionate about design and loved to bring imagination to life. He embraced his team, and above all, always wanted to push the work as far as possible.

Beyond the workplace, Matt was a man of diverse interests and hobbies.  He enjoyed stand up paddleboarding (SUP) and biking.  One of his favorite activities was snowboarding and during the yearly “Hopfest” he would hit the mountains with friends.  He always found joy and freedom in the great outdoors, which included a backyard that Matt had built into a magical playland for Shila and friends.  He enjoyed music and concert-going and was a passionate Baltimore Ravens fan.  Matt's enthusiasm for his team was infectious, with game days being a special occasion in the Hoppe household.

Matt's legacy is one of love, laughter, and a zest for life that touched everyone he met.  He gave the biggest hugs to go along with the biggest smile.  His absence will be deeply felt, but the memories he created will continue to bring smiles to the faces of those who were fortunate enough to know him. Matt Hoppe lived a life full of purpose and passion, and his spirit will forever remain in the hearts of his loved ones.
