Mary E Shaffer

Mary Elizabeth Heaps Shaffer, 88, of Bel Air, Maryland, died April 25, 2022, just days before her 89th birthday. “Betty” Shaffer, daughter of Augustus and Ruby Heaps, loving wife of Roy E. Shaffer, died peacefully in Hooper House after a stroke and brief hospitalization last week. Seven of Betty’s siblings predeceased her. Betty’s sisters Mary Wilson and Eleanor Ryan both survive her. Betty is also survived by her three children:  Terry Eugene Shaffer, Brian Glenn Shaffer (Fran) and Barbara Ann (“Missy”) Shaffer (Ben).  She is also survived by three grandchildren, Jordan Mary Shaffer, Brian Glenn Shaffer, and Anabel Shaffer Barnett.

Betty was a lifetime resident of Harford County. Betty loved to travel and did so extensively in the U.S. and abroad. She was an excellent and competitive bridge and tennis player and bowler. Betty adored her three grandchildren and her lap was the center of their childhoods.  Betty was an energetic and engaged member of multiple Catholic parishes, including St. Mary’s, St Margaret’s, and later St. Ignatius. Betty lived her faith through charitable service at her churches, Meals on Wheels, and feeding the homeless, and was recognized multiple times as a Volunteer of the Year by the Town of Bel Air. 

Betty’s infectious laugh would light up any room and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends.  Services will be arranged by Evans Life Celebration Home - Bel Air, MD with a funeral mass to be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 30, 2020, at St Mary’s Church in Pylesville, MD.
