Mary Horten Powers of Bel Air died April 27, 2021 at Commonwealth Senior Living. She was 98.
Mrs. Powers, daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs Edmund C. Horten was born on November 2, 1922 in Baltimore. She was the wife of the late John A. Powers, Jr. They were married April 10, 1944 at Blessed Sacrament Church.
Mary attended and graduated from Blessed Sacrament School and the Institute of Notre Dame.
Mary was a homemaker, board member of several Mother’s Clubs and also worked for many years as a switchboard operator for the C&P (later Bell Atlantic/Verizon) Telephone Company, Manpower Associates and Long Green Valley Florist. Her favorite vacation spot was Ocean City, Maryland where she enjoyed time with family and friends.
Mary is survived by her daughter Mary Patricia Nicholson and her husband Richard of Forest Hill; her son John A. Powers III and wife Ruth of Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina; her son Denis H. Powers and wife Deborah of Pasadena; five grandchildren: Michael Powers, Kelly Powers, Colleen Powers Griffith and husband Michael, Katie Powers and Jennifer Nicholson Kalwa; 5 great-grandchildren: Quinn Griffith, Evelyn Griffith, Christina McClarren, Alexis Kalwa, and Chance Graciani; loving friend Sharon McCall and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by her sister Elizabeth Ann Kogler and her husband John, her brother William Horten and his wife Carlita, and her grandson James Patrick Powers.
Family will receive friends on Sunday, May 2 from 4 to 7 PM at Evans Life Celebration Home, 3 Newport Drive in Forest Hill. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Ignatius, Hickory on Monday, May 3 at 1 PM. Interment to follow at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens.
