Marian Mothershed Obituary

Marian Justine Overstreet Mothershed (also known as Teeny and Tina) was born April 13, 1927 in Brookneal, VA.  Teeny was predeceased by her husband Carell Mothershed, her father Ulrich Overstreet, her mother Annie Holt, her sisters Myrtle Green, Eunice Barthlow, Elnora Davis, Barbara Dechaine, Charlotte Brooks and brothers Ulrich Overstreet, Jason Overstreet and U.R. Overstreet. She is survived by her daughter Debbie and son-in-law Tom Svoboda, her grandchildren Michal A. Svoboda and Meghan E. Svoboda and her great-grandson Brayden Svoboda. Teeny is survived by her brother David E. Overstreet. Teeny also has numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Teeny started her career adventures when in elementary school where she worked in the cafeteria during lunch time.  She was paid in free lunches for her help collecting and washing the dishes. During high school she took a break from work.  After graduation, there were no jobs in the area where she lived so she moved to Baltimore, Maryland to live with her sister Eunice. In Baltimore she worked for six years filling mail orders at Montgomery Ward.

In 1947, two years after she arrived in Baltimore, her best friend arranged a double date with two young men who were in port on leave in Baltimore.  Marian's date was with Al Mothershed. They went to a movie and afterwards had cokes at the corner drug store.  At first, Marian was terribly disappointed because Al had no money, and she was embarrassed that Al’s buddy paid for all of them to go out.  A few months later, Al and his buddy were again in port on leave in Baltimore.  Teeny and her friend again double dated with the young men. Al and Teeny wrote letters back and forth, and over time their relationship grew.  After two years of dating, Al proposed, and they were married on April 24, 1949.

In 1952, during the Korean War, Al was drafted into the Air Force. Marian and Al spent the majority of this time at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, TX and Travis Air Force Base in Vallejo, CA.  Teeny worked as a sales person in Texas and California.  They returned to Baltimore in 1956 because Al’s job was waiting for him at Bendix.  They lived with Teeny’s sister Eunice and her family until they purchased a home and moved in February of 1957. They stayed in that home for the rest of their lives.  In July of 1957, Teeny gave birth to Debbie.  Teeny stayed at home to take care of Debbie until she turned three years old. Teeny worked at The Hecht Company in Towson for seven months as a salesperson but had to stop working because her car was stolen when she was at work. Teeny stayed home until Debbie started first grade, at which time she started working at Maryland National Bank as a Teller.  She worked there for six months until they wanted her to be a floating teller for all of Maryland.  Teeny quit her job at the bank the same day that she learned of this position change.

In 1962, Teeny’s friend told her about a teller position at Equitable Bank in Baltimore. This began her career at Equitable.  She worked at the Hamilton Branch for several years until she was transferred for a promotion to Head Teller at the Satyr Hill Branch.  After several years there, she was promoted to Assistant Manager at the Eudowood Branch in Towson.  Teeny worked for Equitable Bank for 24 and a half years before she retired in 1986.

Teeny enjoyed her retirement. Over the years in a variety of campers, she and Al discovered and explored such places as Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, Painted Desert, Wyoming, Florida and much more. She enjoyed taking care of her neighbor’s children too.  She liked to be busy – “the energizer bunny”.

Teeny loved to read and do crossword puzzles.  She also enjoyed tending to her tomato plants, flowers, and roses.  She loved family and liked keeping in touch with extended family members and attending the annual family reunions. Teeny enjoyed her church community at Arnolia and became active in the church.

After her husband Al passed in 2009, Teeny spent much more time with her sister Eunice, searching the newspapers for sales and riding from store to store to get the best deals. Both Teeny and Eunice were backseat drivers.  Eunice passed in 2013.  Two days after Eunice's funeral was a snowy day, and this little ball of fluff was running lose in Teeny’s yard. Debbie was with Teeny that day and took the dog in and tried to find the owners of the dog.  After posting signs and seeing if the dog had a chip in her to identify the owners, Teeny decided to keep the ball of fluff and named her Coco.  A new friendship was born and they were inseparable.

Teeny was an amazing lady, a whippersnapper, and staple of her family.  She will be greatly missed.

Family and friends will honor and celebrate Marian's life at the family-owned Evans Life Celebration Home-8800 Harford Road, Parkville, MD 21234, on Wednesday, December 7th from 2-4PM and 6-8PM.  A funeral service will be held on December 8th at 1PM at Arnolia United Methodist Church.  Interment to follow at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens.
