James Torre, III Obituary

The Character of a Man is defined by Faith in God, Love of Family, and Service to Community.

Jim Torre, III was such a Man.  The son of James P. Torre, Jr. and Joan Evans Torre; the grandson of James P. Torre, Sr., and Margaret D’Ambrosio Torre; brother to Steven Torre and his wife, Brenda; the father of James P. Torre, IV, and Tim Torre and his wife Nova; Jim was the devoted husband of Aimee O’Neill and faithful friend to many.

A lifelong resident of Harford County, Jim graduated from North Harford High School in 1974 and was involved in planning the 50th Class reunion, this summer. He learned the trade of commercial truck driving while working for Nick Whiteford and was the youngest “honey dipper” in Harford County. After traveling the country as an independent tractor-trailer trucker, Jim joined Teamsters Union 557 and peddled freight in the LTL industry in the Baltimore Metro area until his retirement in 2004.  His expertise was navigating the narrow streets and alleys of the downtown Baltimore business district.

A horseman by nature, Jim spent many hours in the saddle and was known to frequent the Peddler’s Pub in his youth, arriving on horseback to the delight of the patrons.

When the Harford County Farm Fair was re-established in 1987, Jim designed and commissioned the “Liberty Wagon” to be built by Leola Carriage Company in Lancaster, PA, and brought it back to Harford County by 2-horsepower – a 2-day trip. He was a feature of the Farm Fair with his Liberty Wagon and team of draft horses, Belgians, and then Percherons, delighting in providing a horse-drawn wagon ride to families - all for the reward of the smiles on the children’s faces.

The first team of draft horses to pull the Liberty Wagon was owned by John H. O’Neill of Forest Hill.  Jim arranged to rent the team of horses and then married the Farmer’s Daughter – Aimee O’Neill.  He was known to say, “I wouldn’t trade my Aimee for the best team of horses in the whole world!”

As Jim directed, a Party to celebrate his Life and Family will be held on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at Tower Hill Farm on Island Branch Road in Norrisville beginning at 3 pm, [directions are available by sending an email to: aimeesings828@gmail.com], with a Blessing and Eulogy Service at 4 pm. All are invited to share a meal and stories of the Life of a Good Man.
