Irene Wilkinson

On March 14, 2021, at 100 years - Irene Erna Barchers Wilkinson of Shrewsbury, PA.

Mrs. Wilkinson was born in Ray County, Missouri on January 10, 1921, the daughter of Ernest and Mary Ann Eppler Barchers. She grew up in Callaway County, Missouri, moving to Washington, D.C. with her family in 1940. After marriage, she and her husband moved to suburban Maryland and later settled in Wytheville, Virginia in 1988.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Thomas W. Wilkinson, and five brothers, Ernie, Earl, Max, Bobby, and Richard.

Surviving are her daughter, Carol W. Coffeen and husband Thomas; granddaughters Barbara Roeper and husband Fred, and Pamela Jones and husband Bill; five great-grandchildren, Bryan Roeper, Sean Roeper, Dylan Roeper, Nathan Jones, and Joelle Jones; brother Billy Barchers; two sisters-in-law, Norma Barchers and Loretta Blevins; and many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Wilkinson dedicated over 25 years as a secretary at Bank of America. She was a past president of the Wytheville Ladies Ruritan Club, a member of Friends of the Library, and a long-time member of the United Methodist Church. She volunteered for the Red Cross Bloodmobile and Agape Food Pantry in Wytheville. Irene loved to travel and made journeys through most of the U.S., as well as Bermuda, Mexico, Canada, and the Caribbean. She also enjoyed sewing, reading, and word puzzles. In January 2021, Irene was blessed to celebrate her 100th birthday, with a parade that included fire trucks and cars driven by loving family and friends. 

Family and friends will honor and celebrate Irene's life on Saturday, March 20, 2021 with visitation from 10-11 AM at Hereford Faith & Life United Methodist Church - 16931 York Road, Monkton MD 21111. A funeral service will be held following visitation, at 11 AM.
