H. Schroeder Obituary

On December 19, 2019, H. Richard Schroeder passed away peacefully at WellSpan York Hospital in York, Pennsylvania. Richard was the beloved husband of Grace M. Schroeder (nee Kuo); devoted father of Colonel (Retired) Jeremy J. Schroeder and his wife Amy, Alison M. Nelson and her husband Michael, Lieutenant Colonel Laura M. Schroeder and her husband Daniel Todd; loving grandfather of Gabriel, Grayson, Tristan, Cameron, Tyler, Connor and Hollis; and dear brother of Paul Schroeder and his wife Thuy.

Born in Baltimore, Richard was the oldest of three brothers to Maurice Schroeder and Margaret Froehlinger of Catonsville. He departed Polytechnic High School in 1959 for service in the Marine Corps and upon completing his tour, returned to Baltimore where he met and married Grace and went on to share 50 years with her. Richard was an avid pianist and accomplished musician, having performed in string quartets, jazz bands, choir groups, baroque chamber groups such as Pro Musica Rara, as well as freelance work as the harpsichord accompanist for the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. He worked as a Technical and Engineering Manual Writer for Westinghouse on various radar and communications equipment for 20 years before returning to music as a profession. Serving as Music Director at several churches over the years, he also worked for years doing Holiday Musical Events for local high schools, worked as Adjunct Professor of Harpsichord at Towson University and as a Music Instructor at the Carver Center for Arts and Technology. A MENSA member with a kind heart, boisterous laugh, and wide-ranging humor, he enjoyed crosswords, playing piano, collecting American Flyer model trains, travelling with his wife, all things having to do with cars, and spending time with his grand-children. He was truly an interesting man who could talk about any subject with anyone, and a friend to all who knew him.
