On June 8, 2022, George Judson Stiles passed away peacefully. Beloved husband of the late Marguerite Morris and the late Kathleen Stiles; devoted uncle of Susan Russell, and her husband John and Dianne Shriver and her husband Amos and many great and great-great nieces and nephews.
George was born in Norfolk, Virginia. He entered the service in 1943. He served multiple roles that included duty with the Rangers in the 1st Battalion, and an assignment to the 5th Army near Naples. George joined the First Special Service Force at Anzio, Italy and was assigned to 3rd Company – 1st Regiment. After FSSF disbanded, he was re-assigned to Company B in the newly formed 474th Infantry Regiment and served in France, Germany and Norway.
On February 23, 2017, George was presented with the Norway Defense Medal for his assistance in the liberation of Norway during WWII with the 474th Infantry Regiment at a wonderful celebration with family and friends.
George initially studied chemistry at MIT, later switching to Johns Hopkins to receive his degree in physics. He was employed at Aberdeen Proving Grounds for almost 30 years.
George was always a quiet man with a quick wit and dry sense of humor and everyone loved him. In his early days, he enjoyed photography and film. He never missed a chance to be outdoors, especially feeding the birds. In his final years, he liked to keep moving. He would walk every chance he could. He loved to learn new things to keep his mind sharp, by reading, and listening to news radio. He was healthy and independent through almost his entire life. Way to go Uncle George!
A funeral service will be on August 20, 2022 at Bel Air Memorial Gardens at 11:00 a.m. where he will lay to rest with family. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Gilchrist at 555 Towsontown Blvd W Towson, MD 21204 gilchristcares.org/giving/.
KEEP SMILIN’ in Heaven Uncle George!
