Alden N. Addy - Teacher, Artist, Animal lover and Innkeeper
On Thursday, February 13, 2020, Alden (nee Nelson) Addy, age 92, of Glen Arm, Maryland passed away with her family and pets by her side. She was the beloved wife of James “Jim” Addy for 59 years; devoted mother of Andrew Addy and his wife Joyce; John Addy and his wife Lisa, and Mary Zane “MZ” Addy and her partner Christina Gedeon. She was also the loving grandmother of Sarah Long and Jillian Addy; dear great grandmother of Charlie Long.
Alden’s 38-year teaching career began in Midway, Kentucky in 1949 and culminated with teaching English at the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute from 1973 to 1987. Prior to teaching English, Alden taught art at Gwynns Falls Junior High School from 1959 to 1963 where she met her husband, Dr. James A. Addy.
After retiring from Poly, Alden became the owner and operator of Fillmore Street Bed and Breakfast in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. She and her husband enjoyed a 22-year run as the first B&B innkeepers in West Virginia.
Her family and friends will remember her as one of the first unofficial house flippers and card-carrying grammar police officer, lover of creatures great and small, green thumb gardener, world traveler, strategic bridge player, gourmet breakfast chef and gifted painter. She lived a long, full life and will be missed dearly by all she touched.
The family will receive friends at Evans Life Celebration Home – Monkton, 16924 York Road, Monkton, Maryland 21111 on Monday, February 17 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. A Funeral Service will be held at Hereford Faith and Life Church, 16931 York Road, Monkton, Maryland 21111 on Tuesday, February 18 beginning at 11 AM. Interment will follow at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens. Please remember Alden with memorial contributions to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or to Gilchrist Hospice.
