Dr. William H. Brown, Sr.

Died: November 11, 2012

U.S. VeteranDr. William Henry Brown, M.D., 88, of Phoenix, passed away on Sunday, November 11, 2012 at his home.  He was born September 18, 1924 in Newburgh, New York.  He was the son of the late William T. and Margaret (nee McCollam) Brown. 

In 1942, Dr. Brown entered Columbia University only to be drafted into the US Naval Reserves in December 1942.  He received his BS from Columbia in 1944 and his M.D from the New York Medical College in 1948.  He served as a medical intern at the New York City Hospital from 1948-1949.  In 1950, he was recalled to active duty with the Navy to serve during the Korean Conflict from 1950-1952 when he was honorably discharged.  From 1952-1954 he served residencies at Hartford Hospital, Hartford, CT, Brigham & Women's Hospital, Brookline, MA and City Hospital, Welfare Island, NY, NY.  In 1955 he joined private practice with Kurt Meyerhoff, MD in Schenectady, NY until 1983, during this time he also served as Chairman of The Obstetrics & Gynecology Department at Ellis Hospital from 1969-1983.  He then served at the Chairman of the Obstetrics & Gynecology Department at Al Hada Hospital in Taif, Saudi Arabia from 1983-1986.  From 1986 until his retirement in 1994 he worked for the Johns Hopkins Medical System.  He was a life fellow & diplomat of the American Congress of Obstetricians & Gynecologists and a life member of the American Medical Association.

Dr. Brown is survived by his wife, Marlene (nee Giammatteo) Brown; their 8 children, Jeffrey Brown, M.D (Margaret McCormick), Linda Brown (Nick Hole), Kurt Brown, M.D. (Jane Gould, M.D.) William Brown, Jr., Lisa Burtz (Marcus Burtz), Gregg O'Rourke, Kara Brown-Perrett (Kevin Perrett), Erin Brown (Jeffrey Broderick); grandchildren, Jenny Burtz, Matthew Brown, Nicholas Brown, Andrew Brown, William Brown, III, Cameron Brown, Maeve Brown, Aiden Broderick, Milo Perrett and Hannah Broderick; great grandson, Ryder Shane Perry.  He was preceded in death by a sister, Sally Brown Owens.

Family & friends will honor Bill's life at the family owned Evans Funeral Chapel & Cremation Services - Monkton, 16924 York Road (York & Monkton Roads - Hereford) from 2:30-4 PM Saturday at which time a memorial service will be held.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to New York Medical College, Office of Development & Alumni Relations, 40 Sunshine Cottage Road, Valhalla, NY 10595 or to the American Cancer Society, 8219 Town Center Drive, Baltimore, MD 21236.
