Donald A. Newell, Sr. of Forest Hill died Saturday, January 19, 2013, at the UCMC as the result of a ruptured aorta aneurysm. He was born in Meadville, PA on January 3, 1924 and just celebrated his 89th birthday.
Don enlisted in the U. S. Navy in June 1942 after graduating from Meadville High School. After boot camp he was assigned to further training at Little Creek, VA in one of the Navy's newest ships - a LST - Landing Ship Tank and before too long crossed the Atlantic and made landings in North Africa, Sicily and Italy landing troops, supplies and tanks. The ship then headed to England to train for D-Day. After the first landing he was ordered back to England for additional troops and supplies but the ship was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-Boat. Many crew members were rescued by a British ship after many hours in the cold English Channel. After the end of the war he re-enlisted in the Navy and was assigned the U.S.S. Philippine Sea, an aircraft carrier and went on the expedition to the South Pole with Admiral Byrd. After his enlistment he was employed at the Baltimore Gas and Electric for the next 36 years.
He became a 32nd degree Mason and was a member of Jephthah Lodge # 222, a Tall Cedar of Lebanon in which he became extremely active being a member of the Senior Drum and Bugle Corps. He also was a member of the VFW Post 9083 in Parkville.
After moving to Harford County in 1972 he joined the Senior Center's Wood Working Class and used that time to use the many power tools he had collected over the years. He greatly enjoyed deer hunting and fishing and went each year for many years. He and his wife traveled at least two trips a year and afterward enjoyed the albums created as a result of those trips.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of 68 years and two sons, Donald and Raymond and his wife, Karen. He was the proud grandfather of two grandchildren, Daryl and his wife, Angelina and Danielle Faircloth and her husband, Josh. He has three great-grandchildren, Nathan Newell, Lacy and Chad Faircloth. Another grandchild, Paul Newell died in 2004.
There will be a Receiving of Friends held at the Evans Funeral Chapel & Cremation Service-Bel Air, 3 Newport Drive, Forest Hill, on Tuesday from 11 A.M. to 1:00 P.M.. Services and Interment will be Private.
