On January 18, 2013, Earl Calvin Peregoy “Uncle Buddy”, beloved husband of 65 years to the late Lois N. Peregoy; devoted father of Linda Shaffer and her husband Stephen, Bonnie Peregoy, Mark Peregoy and his wife Jan Falcey; loving grandfather of Joseph Peregoy and his wife Kate, Stephen Shaffer, Jr. and his wife Sarah and Timothy Shaffer; great grandfather of Emily Shaffer, Samantha Shaffer and Luke Calvin Peregoy.
Calvin was born during a severe snowstorm in Catonsville, Maryland, on January 8, 1922 to Ernest and Annie Peregoy. The Peregoys had one daughter and five other sons, one of which lived only two weeks. The family moved to Woodlawn when Calvin was five.
Calvin graduated from Catonsville high School in 1939. He studied accounting at the Baltimore College of Commerce for two and a half years he tried several jobs before going to work in 1941 for what later became the Mobil Oil Corporation (now Exxon Mobil). Just a year later he took leave of his job because he was called into the army. After training in Camp Shelby and other locations, including Louisiana maneuvers, his unit, the 31st Infantry “Dixie” Division, set sail for duty in the South Pacific. The division saw combat in New Guinea, the East Indies, and Mindanao in the Philippines.
While in the army, Calvin carried on a correspondence with a young lady he had never met named Lois Fick. Their fateful meeting occurred on New Years Eve 1945. They were engaged on St. Patricks Day and married the next year on January 25, 1947. Lois, who had been found by Jesus a short time earlier, was instrumental in leading Calvin to meet her Lord.
Lois and Calvin had four children: Linda Joyce Shaffer who lives with her husband Stephen Shaffer Sr. in Stewartstown, Pennsylvania, David Richard, who did not survive his birth, Bonnie Robin Peregoy of Annapolis, and Mark Calvin Peregoy, who lives with his wife Jan in Cordova, Maryland. These children have given them three grandsons: Joseph Peregoy, now married to Kate; Stephen Shaffer, Jr., now married to Sarah; and Timothy, who is engaged to Lisa. They have been blessed with three precious great-grandchildren, infants, Luke Peregoy and Samantha Shaffer and Emily Shaffer, age 2.
While their children were growing up, they lived in various places along the east coast as Calvin’s job with Mobil Oil moved him around to New Jersey, Philadelphia, New York, and Fairfax, where he retired as a Systems Analyst in 1982.
The Peregoys attended a number of different churches as the Lord (not Mobil Oil) moved them around the east coast. Calvin, who described himself as a “presbyterian with a small p” served God in several ways such as elder, treasurer, and Sunday School teacher. They moved back to Baltimore in April 1987. They began attending Calvary Tabernacle the following summer, where Calvin served in various “behind the scenes” activities, because of his willingness to serve whenever asked.
A few years ago Lois and Calvin moved into the village and joined the Augsburg family. Thanks to Lois’s outgoing nature, they had many friends there and the highlight of Calvin’s week was the Thursday night Hearts game with Marty.
Calvin enjoyed his family, his computer, blue grass music, and NASCAR racing. He loved Augsburg Lutheran Home and seemed comforted to return “home” just prior to his death in the wee hours of Friday, January 18, 2013.
A funeral service will be held 11 AM Monday at Augsburg Lutheran Chapel, 6811 Campfield Rd.- Lochern . Interment will be private. Memorial contributions in Calvin’s name may be made to Augsburg Lutheran Home.
